Frost Drive Vault

Tax returns. Business books. The scans of everything important. Most home PCs run Windows Home edition — which doesn't include Microsoft's drive encryption at all. Drive Vault creates a hidden, AES-256 encrypted vault drive on your PC for the files that would hurt most in the wrong hands, and locks it the moment you walk away.

Planned price: $79 one-time Windows 10 & 11 — incl. Home edition AES-256 encryption

Honest notes

  • Encryption protects files at rest — a locked vault on a stolen laptop. It can't protect files while the vault is open and the PC is in use.
  • Forget the password and lose the USB key, and the vault is gone — that's what real encryption means. Setup makes you acknowledge it, and shows you how to keep a recovery backup.

Drive Vault FAQ

My Windows already has BitLocker. Do I need this?

If you run Windows Pro with BitLocker on, you're covered for whole-drive encryption. Drive Vault is for the far more common case: Windows Home PCs with no built-in option — and for anyone who wants one specific vault, separate from the rest of the drive, with USB-key access.

Is the emergency wipe dangerous?

It's off unless you turn it on, and you set the wrong-try limit. It's there for people whose threat is real — a stolen laptop full of client files — not as a default.
